 Hardware architecture

Time&Space terminals are key hardware components and share the same hardware architecture. Both support the same subnetwork communication based on RS485 standard and both can be a part of the same subnetwork segment. According to their communication capabilities, terminals fall into four connectivity types:
  • Master: Device with host communication and RS485 subnetwork interface. Acts as communication bridge and connects up to 31 slave devices to host.

  • Slave: Pure RS485 subnetwork device.

  • Single: Device with host connection only and no subnetwork capability.

  • Stand-alone: Device without any data communication (also called "unplugged").

For host communication, terminals (master and single device types) are equipped with serial port (RS232, 20mA current loop) or optional integrated Ethernet interface.

All devices (except stand-alone) support online and offline operation with full autonomy (offline access control, offline event logging). All devices are equipped with two door strike controls and two card reader interfaces.

The combination of full offline autonomy and master/slave subnetwork concept assures high degree of flexibility without any extra control or storage devices which are often significantly increasing complexity and vulnerability of the system.

Wireless terminal connection

There are more and more situations requiring wireless or even mobile terminal connections. Some examples:

  • Construction and other temporary sites that don’t have fixed installations.
  • Mobile sites or teams that frequently move from location to location.
  • Any building or site where cabling is too expensive or not practical.
